Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the correct shaft?
We offer SwingFit : Interactive Shaft Fitting System. The interactive program is designed
to effectively guide you through the steps of choosing the correct shaft for your
swing. You simply start with your swing speed to help select the shaft flex. Then
you must decide on what weight fits your control vs. distance issues. Finally, your
ball flight expectations can be met by learning more about the shaft’s launch type.
How can I hit the ball farther?
Making sure you are using the proper equipment is a key part in maximizing distance.
Every golfer should go through a club fitting session annually or when anytime their
physical condition changes. Hitting the ball farther is a function of swing technique
and physical strength; however, the most important part of the equipment aspect
is having the proper shaft and correct loft at any stage of your golfing career.
Who plays UST shafts on Tour?
Any given week on the PGA Tour, UST will have some 60 shafts in play with the best
players in the world. To name some of the more prominent players using UST high
performance golf shafts are Jim Furyk, Davis Love III, and Rod Pampling.
Which torque rating is best for me?
With today’s larger heads, lower torque in a shaft is necessary to help keep it
from twisting. However, lower torque will make the shaft feel tighter. If your swing
is over 100 mph with a driver, then you will need a shaft with a torque rating less
than 3.5. For swing speeds ranging from 85 to 100 mph, a shaft with 3.0 to 4.5 torque
rating should work well. Anything less than 85 mph should look for shafts with torque
around 4.0.
Can I feel the difference in 10 grams between a Proforce V2 55, 65 or 75?
You will no doubt have a hard time feeling the difference of 10 grams in the shaft
alone. However, choosing the correct weight in a shaft again depends on your control
vs. distance factor. If a your main issue is more distance and your swing speed
is less than 85 mph, then a shaft that weighs less than 60 grams would be a good
place to start in the fitting process. Golfers between 85 and 100 mph should look
at shafts in the 60 to 75 gram range to maximize both distance and control. To help
the golfer at 100+ mph maximize control, their shaft should be around 70 to 85 grams.
Can I tip trim a shaft to make it play stronger?
If you trim an inch off the tip end of the shaft before installing into a standard
bore head, you can make the shaft stronger by about a half flex.
Why should I play graphite shafts?
Graphite shafts in woods practically dominate the market. Iron shafts are split
somewhat. Graphite shaft makers such as UST have greatly improved quality and design
of iron shafts over the last five years. A golfer should be fit for the correct
weight in iron shafts just as they are for wood shafts. Their control versus distance
factor can play a big part in this fitting, as well. The main difference in custom
iron shafts and stock iron shafts is more consistent ball flight, feel and overall
performance.
